A BIG thank you to all our Junior School families for your support in making Term One so productive and successful. The children have settled into their grades and we are very impressed with their positive attitude to learning and further developing their social skills with new class mates. 

Another HUGE thank you to everyone for your efforts and support with making our Fete such a wonderful success. We look forward to finding out how much money we have raised towards improving our physical learning environment to benefit our students.

We wish you all a safe, relaxing holiday and Easter with your family and friends. We look forward to seeing you all back at school for another fantastic term on Tuesday 18th April. During the holidays we encourage you to continue reading with your children and playing games to consolidate their understanding of sounds and high frequency words.

IN THE JUNIOR SCHOOL WE ARE LEARNING TO: (WALT)...

Writing:  
Week 8 and 9:
Foundation: 
  • Recognise all upper and lower case letters and the most common sound that each letter represents 
  • Understand that punctuation is a feature of written text different from letters and recognise how capital letters are used for names, and that capital letters and full stops signal the beginning and end of sentences 
  • Understand that spoken sounds and words can be written and know how to write some high-frequency words and other familiar words including their name  
Grade 1:
·         Listen to, recite and perform poems, chants, rhymes and songs, imitating and inventing sound patterns including alliteration and rhyme 
Grade 2:
·         Identify, reproduce and experiment with rhythmic, sound and word patterns in poems, chants, rhymes and songs 

Spelling: 
Week 8: 
Foundation: 'p' as in popcorn
Grade 1: 'i' as in tin 
Grade 2: 'a' as in banana 
Week 9: 
Foundation: 'j' as in jump
Grade 1 and 2: revision of graphs and digraphs covered throughout the term.

Reading: 
Week 8 and 9:
Foundation:
  • Recognise that sentences are key units for expressing ideas 
  • Recognise that texts are made up of words and groups of words that make meaning  
  • Recognise all upper- and lower-case letters and the most common sound that each letter represents 
  • Blend sounds associated with letters when reading consonant-vowel-consonant words 
Grade 1:
  • Use comprehension strategies to build literal and inferred meaning about key events, ideas and information in texts that they listen to, view and read by drawing on growing knowledge of context, text structures and language features 
Grade 2: 
  • Use comprehension strategies to build literal and inferred meaning and begin to analyse texts by drawing on growing knowledge of context, language and visual features and print and multi modal text structures 

Maths: 
Week 8 and 9:
Foundation:
  •  Represent practical situations to model addition
  •  Answer yes, no questions to collect information
Grade 1: 
  • Represent and solve simple addition using a range of strategies
  • Choose simple questions and gather responses
Grade 2: 
  • Solve simple addition problems using a range of efficient mental strategies
  • Recognise and explain the connection between addition and subtraction/recall addition facts for single digit numbers
  • Identify a question of interest based on one categorical variable
  • Gather data relevant to the  question
  • Identify questions or issues for categorical variables
  • Identify data sources and plan methods of data collection and recording

ICT: 
Identify and explore digital systems (hardware and software components) for a purpose

Working With Children Check
All parents/guardians, visitors & volunteers to the school MUST sign in & out of the school and display their WWCC in a lanyard, which is available at the school office. The Department of Education requires any person involved in an activity where children may be present to have a current WWCC or have supplied proof that they have applied for a WWCC with the Department of Justice. All schools are required to comply with the Working with Children Act 2005. Volunteers are expected to carry the WWCC card on their person at all times when working or volunteering at the school or during school related activities. There is no fee for this check. Born to Soar Lego Competition
Born to Soar is running a Lego Competition which is open to students Australia wide over the holidays. Students will need to build something from Lego that inspires curiosity. We will also be asking children, who like to write, to pose curious questions to the builders and there will be a short story competition inspired by the Lego builds. Lost Property:
We are collecting a lot of lunch and snack boxes which have been left outside and in the corridors. If you are looking for any lost items we are housing them for collection in the labelled pigeon hole near Miss Arentz's room.

Art Smocks
Mrs Unwin has requested that all students please have an art smock at school to start Term 2. There is no need to purchase one if you don't already have one as an old shirt or thick t-shirt will do the job. We would rather not send students home wearing their artistic pursuits!

Learning and Teaching

Term One is flying along at a great speed and all the children are well settled into their routines and learning. The Junior Area is a happy and safe place in which to play and learn. During the last few weeks of school we have some exciting events coming up which we encourage families to come along to and join in the fun with their children. Firstly, the children will be entertaining everyone with a performance at a Friday assembly and then.... the Easter Bonnet parade returns to MPPS! Check the dates below and mark it on your calendars.


IN THE JUNIOR SCHOOL WE ARE LEARNING TO: (WALT)...

Writing:  
Foundation: form letters and recognise upper and lowercase letters and develop the confidence 'to have a go' at writing a simple sentence.
Week 6: write interesting narratives about a Kimochi character including the beginning, problem and ending
Week 7: write an invitation to a friend or family member to come to our school fete

Spelling: 
Week 6:'o' as in /octopus/ (Foundation), 'e' as in bed (G1), 'dge' as in fridge (G2), 
Week 7:Revision of sounds (Foundation), ‘ck’ as in duck (G1), ‘air’ as in hair (G2) 

Reading: 
Foundation: strategies for decoding new words including looking at the initial sound and picture 
Week 6: synthesize information. We will be identifying ideas in texts and creating new ideas
Week 7: two words make a contraction and we will be identifying contractions in texts


Maths: 
Week 6 and 7:
Foundation: Using materials to model addition
G1: using a range of strategies to represent and solve simple addition problems 
G2: using a range of mental strategies to solve simple addition problems 

UNIT OF STUDY - WELLBEING:
Pursue your personal best no matter who you work with. 
How to be a part of a safe and orderly environment.

ICT: How to use digital technology safely. Use ICT programs to consolidate and revise Mathematics and Literacy skills.

Fete Notice:
As our Fete date is getting closer we still need extra helpers on our class stalls.   The Fete supports your children, so if you can spare some time to assist, please add your name to the rosters displayed near our classrooms.
